Help Me Start A Restaurant!

By TroyCampbell, posted July 28, 2010

My brother, my brother-in-law, and I are seriously thinking about starting up a restaurant in the next couple years. We’ve been toying with the idea for some time now, perhaps a couple years, and as time has gone on it is looking more and more like something that we will really do. So, I have been thinking about various restaurant ideas, and realized it might be worthwhile to start soliciting people I know for YOUR ideas. To that end, I’ve created very short, little survey for you guys to help us get our restaurant concept started.

If you wouldn’t mind taking a few minutes to let me know what you think about each of the questions below, I will be forever in your debt. Who knows, maybe it will really go somewhere and then I’ll give you a free meal from this restaurant in return someday!

  1. What is the first thing that comes to mind after hearing the word “Restaurant?”
  2. What is your favorite type of food?
  3. Do you prefer breakfast restaurants, brunch restaurants, or dinner restaurants?
  4. For you, what is the most defining part of a dining experience?
  5. Do you prefer casual dining or formal dining?
  6. In your opinion, what is an acceptable price for a meal at a casual restaurant?
  7. In your opinion, what is an acceptable price for a meal at a formal restaurant?
  8. Before visiting a new restaurant, how likely are you to search online for the restaurant’s web site?
  9. Do you prefer a light, open environment or do you prefer be in distinct, separate space?
  10. If you could add a single feature onto any restaurant of your choice, what would that feature be?

1.What is the first thing that comes to mind after hearing the word “Restaurant?” Food..haha

2.What is your favorite type of food? Italian/ Mexican/ Sushi

3.Do you prefer breakfast restaurants, brunch restaurants, or dinner restaurants? I would say Dinner

4.For you, what is the most defining part of a dining experience? Good services, I go out to be waited on not always because the food tastes better than home.

5.Do you prefer casual dining or formal dining? Casual

6.In your opinion, what is an acceptable price for a meal at a casual restaurant? 7-8 dollars

7.In your opinion, what is an acceptable price for a meal at a formal restaurant? 15-20 sometimes more

8.Before visiting a new restaurant, how likely are you to search online for the restaurant’s web site? I always check their menu online to make sure I see something I like, I also look for any specials they may have.

9.Do you prefer a light, open environment or do you prefer be in distinct, separate space? Not sure it really depends…I think sometimes light and open makes me feel like I have to hurry. For open I think of tables with chairs and not booth’s (I love booth’s..haha)

10.If you could add a single feature onto any restaurant of your choice, what would that feature be? I always love a bar area…somewhere to sit and have a drink if there’s a wait or even eat if I don’t feel like a booth. Not sure how well this would work in Utah, then again maybe you won’t open it there

1) What is the first thing that comes to mind after hearing the word “Restaurant?” The eternal mental battle of "should I spend the money" vs. "I hate cooking"

2) What is your favorite type of food? African (yes, I'm serious)

3) Do you prefer breakfast restaurants, brunch restaurants, or dinner restaurants? Prob dinner if I had to choose one.

4) For you, what is the most defining part of a dining experience? Quality of food.

5) Do you prefer casual dining or formal dining? Both, it depends on the occasion.

6) In your opinion, what is an acceptable price for a meal at a casual restaurant? $7

7) In your opinion, what is an acceptable price for a meal at a formal restaurant? $25

8) Before visiting a new restaurant, how likely are you to search online for the restaurant’s web site? Very likely

9) Do you prefer a light, open environment or do you prefer be in distinct, separate space? Distinct seperate space

10) If you could add a single feature onto any restaurant of your choice, what would that feature be? Larger portions at...everywhere.

BTW, I worked at Olive Garden for 6 years and almost went into management before I decided to teach. So if you want any other advice on the subject or have any questions, I can hold my own when it comes to restaurant knowledge. Let me know. :-)

A small bit of unrequested extra advice: people, no matter where they live, are ALWAYS looking for a quick & affordable place to eat lunch on their lunchbreaks. This is why Olive Garden (endless soup & salad) maintains so many customers during times of the year when most other restaurants don't have much business at all. If people know they can get in, out, & back to work on time (reliably) for a reasonable price, you'll have a solid client base.
